The Colombian Championship is a sporting competition located at the top of the football hierarchy in Colombia between eighteen best teams in Colombia. It is launched in 1948 by the División Mayor del Fútbol Profesional Colombiano (Dimayor), a complementary organization to the Colombian Football Federation. The competition initially called División Mayor has now become the Liga Águila for sponsorship reasons and takes place each year in two phases.Since the first season in 1948 the tournament has been played for 64 years (including the 1989 season, suspended before its term) giving rise to the award of 76 titles of champions due to the recent organization in semi-annual tournament.


The first competition is won by the Independiente Santa Fe and the most recent, the closing tournament 2012, is won by Millonarios, who gets his fourteenth title, which allows him to be the most titled club in the country.According to the IFFHS 2011-2012 ranking, the Colombian championship is the 21st best championship in the world and the 6th in America behind the Brazilian Championship, the Argentine Championship, the Chilean Championship, the Ecuadorian Championship and the Championship of Paraguay. Historically, according to the IFFFHS, it ranks 3rd in the South American championships behind the Brazilian and Argentine championships. 

History 

The birth of professional Colombian football is directly linked to the creation of the División Mayor del Fútbol Profesional Colombiano (Dimayor), which was founded on 27 June 1948 in Barranquilla, precisely in order to organize a professional football tournament in the country . At this event, the date of 15 August of that same year is chosen as the opening date of the championship. The opening match of the first season pits the Atlético Municipal and the National University of Colombia with a score of 2 to 0. The first goal of the championship is marked in the fifteenth minute of this match by Rafael Serna. The first club crowned champion at the end of this first season is the Independiente Santa Fe based in Bogota.During the 1949 championship, due to a strike in Argentinian football, an era known as El Dorado began, during which many national stars such as Alfredo Di Stéfano and Adolfo Pedernera were recruited. Both sign for the Millonarios de Bogota. Other Colombian clubs also hire famous players from abroad, including many Peruvians. Valeriano López becomes the star of Deportivo Cali where he is associated with other Peruvian players, the Independiente Medellín forms a team comprising 12 Peruvians in its workforce, including Roberto Drago and Segundo Castillo Varela. The season ended with the victory of the Millonarios in the race for the title of champion.In 1950, the Sport Caldas (now Once Caldas) created a surprise by winning the championship, for the first time in its history, relegating Millonarios to second place. However Millonarios remains the main beneficiary of the El Dorado period by winning three consecutive titles in 1951, 1952 and 1953.The championship of 1954 sees the first coronation of the Atlético Nacional, in a competition marked by the economic crisis and which seals the period known as El Dorado, forcing several teams to withdraw from the competition. The season 1955 sees the crowning of a new champion, the Independiente Medellín club, the Atlético Nacional finishing vice-champion. The year 1956 is the year when the Deportes Quindío wins the championship for the first time and until then only in its history after a fight for the title with Millonarios and the Boca Juniors of Cali.

The tournament organized in 1957 is the longest and most confusing championship in the history of Colombian football; In the first place is played a round of championship by return, the winner of this championship is qualified for the national final.
