HNL or MAXtv Prva Liga for sponsorship reasons, is the highest category competition in the Croatian soccer leagues system. It is organized by the Croatian Football Federation. It was created when Croatia became independent of Yugoslavia, and its first season was disputed in 1992. The Prva HNL counts on 16 participants, who dispute their matches between July and May.In all its history, only three teams have won the league ever. Dinamo Zagreb have won 17 titles, Hajduk Split with six and NK Zagreb have been the only team to break that hegemony.

History

Before the Prva HNL was created, Croatia had a league between 1941 and 1945, when it was a puppet state during World War II. As soon as the war ended, there was the unification of Yugoslavia and the Croatian clubs were integrated into the new national championship. The dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990s caused the First League of Yugoslavia to disappear in 1992. Croatia proclaimed its independence on January 12, 1992, and most Croatian clubs recognized the Croatian Football Federation, which The work to constitute a new league tournament as soon as possible. 29 of February of 1992 began the first season of the Prva HNL, that counted on 12 teams invited by the federation. Among them were the two best clubs of Croatian football during the Yugoslav era, Dinamo Zagreb - sprinted HAŠK Građanski- and Hajduk Split. The first champion was Hajduk Split. Due to the war of independence, the processes to form their own tournament, with a calendar from February to June, were accelerated instead of the usual European system, and many clubs could not play in their usual fields because their cities were being attacked.1With recognition by UEFA, the 1992-93 season of the Prva HNL was the first in which their best could play European competitions. The tournament was extended to 16 teams, and a year later it grew to 18. There were no descents to other categories until the 1994-95 season, when the system of divisions of Croatian football was consolidated. Over the years the Prva HNL was acquiring different formats, which resulted in a division with 12 clubs. Although in the year 2009-10 there was the latest expansion to 16 clubs, the economic problems of the entities made the Federation return to 12 from 2012.Throughout its history, the Prva HNL has been dominated by Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split. The first and only team to win the league apart from these two entities was NK Zagreb, who managed to win in the 2001-02 season with a squad that was Ivica Olić, top scorer of the year, and trained by Zlatko Kranjčar.
